First day at Code Club

I am in the process of taking over the running of a Code Club in Cardiff. This is a great opportunity to help young people develop their coding skills and learn about technology. I met the children for the first time today. They are a group of enthusiastic and creative individuals who are eager to learn. I am excited to work with them and help them explore the world of coding. This is the only council-run Code Club in Cardiff, they have aspirations to expand the number of clubs in the city so I am keen to help them achieve this goal.

A 100% female class

I was amazed to discover that the entire class are female students. Despite computer science being the fastest-growing STEM subject, girls remain significantly outnumbered by boys. In 2023, only 20% of GCSE Computer Science entries and just 15% of all A-level Computer Science entries in England were from female students, a trend that continues to impact female representation in the tech workforce. I have brought up two daughters, and am sensitive to the challenges that girls face in pursuing careers in technology so I am particularly excited to give these four girls the opportunity to explore coding in a fun and supportive environment.

What is Code Club?

Code Club is a global network of free coding clubs for young people, helping them develop skills in programming and digital creation. It emphasises creativity, problem-solving, and confidence-building in technology. The clubs are open to everyone, with support from global partners, and aim to prepare youth for a world shaped by digital advancements. Code Club is part of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, a charity focused on empowering young people through computing. For more information, visit Code Club’s About page.

Python and web development

Code Club offers a range of projects for young people to work on, including games, animations, and websites. The projects are designed to be fun and engaging, while also teaching valuable coding skills. Whilst the majority of projects would typically be based around the Scratch, some of the children are keen to learn Python and web development so in the coming weeks we will be exploring possible study tracks and working with the children to help them decide what they would like to learn.

STEM Ambassador programme

I discovered the opportunity to take over the running of this Code Club through the STEM Ambassador programme. STEM Ambassadors are volunteers who help inspire young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). They work with schools, clubs, and other organisations to provide hands-on learning experiences and share their passion for STEM subjects. The programme is run by STEM Learning, a UK-based organization that supports STEM education and careers. For more information, visit STEM Learning’s website.
